Sony Electronics plans to let users customize their picture-taking abilities by downloading 'apps' to its new NEX-5R WiFi-enabled compact system camera. The NEX-5R, announced on Wednesday, builds on the well-respected NEX-5N design, adding the aforementioned WiFi connectivity and syncing, compatibility with 'Camera Apps,' and a 'Fast Hybrid' autofocus system.
Sony said that the NEX-5R includes a redesigned 16.1 megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor, which integrates 99 phase-detection AF points. The NEX-5R uses those points to quickly acquire a focus point, and then uses contrast detection to refine the focus point (or 'confirm extremely fine, precise details,' according to Sony). Phase detection is also used during high-speed continuous shooting in order to achieve continuous AF at 10 frames per second.

Sony has also added WiFi to the NEX-5N, enabling photos to be transferred wirelessly to a computer, as well as to tablets and smartphones using Sony's PlayMemories Mobile app. WiFi is increasingly becoming a standard feature in compact and system cameras as users become more accustomed to the convenience of smartphone cameras. We applaud the trend, though we hope that manufacturers consider offering built-in or optional cellular connections for future cameras.
An always-on network connection that works outside the range of a convenient WiFi hotspot would be especially useful for Sony's new downloadable 'Camera Apps.' These apps allow users to add a variety of 'custom' features to compatible NEX system cameras. The first included app is 'Direct Upload,' which will automatically post photos to Facebook when in range of a WiFi network. Other apps available at launch will include 'Picture Effect+,' 'Bracket Pro,' 'Multi Frame NR,' 'Photo Retouch,' and 'Smart Remote Control.' 'Time-Lapse,' 'Cinematic Photo,' and other apps are promised to be released at a future date.
The NEX-5R doesn't run Android, like Nikon's recently announced Coolpix S800c, and Sony hasn't mentioned whether or not third-party developers will be able to develop 'Camera Apps.' So, we don't expect Instagram or Photoshop Touch popping up anytime soon. Still, we think the idea in general is a good one, and we hope more camera makers will follow suit.
